A sound-based installation. It explores our notification culture and the injunctions we get daily from computers.
Notification sounds are dispersed throughout the gallery space using hidden speakers and people’s phones, triggered by an array of roaming and stationary, passive and reactive sensors.
The dings and their ebb and flow prompts exhibit visitors to impulsively check their devices.
Every 25 minutes the dings come into cacophonic sync and reveal themselves as music (it’s interesting music in its own right).
The piece draws on the Pavlovian reactions we have developed to notification sounds coming from our personal electronic devices. The name is inspired by Phantom Vibration Syndrome
